What is the inspiration for your label?

We were inspired by the amount of musical talent in our local area of Niagara, and IndoorShoes began as a way to promote that talent, and to help local bands grow and become visible outside of the area. We began just to help our friends, and have maintained that mentality since then, working with some of our favourite musicians, and best friends.

Do you have any influences outside of music in how you run your company?

Outside of the music, we try really hard to embody the ‘shop local, support local’ mentality. On top of being a record label, IndoorShoes is a concert promotions company and we promote 2-3 shows per week. In doing that, we’re working with a massive amount of local musicians who have different opportunities to play and make money doing so. We are always looking to partner with local businesses, organizations and individuals to help out where we can, and try to be part of a growing community in Niagara that supports itself.

What’s the best market you’ve ever been to? What did you buy?

In our area, there are very few markets to speak of, so we probably don’t have nearly as much experience with them. I (Erik) have personally spent plenty of time and money browsing Ebay stores in search of my favourite albums. For me, tracking down some hard to find Constantines records is a highlight for sure.

What kind of deals will you have on your stall?

We’ll have a few items on sale from our release catalog, and will be giving away t-shirts as well.

Why did you say yes to doing this market?

The opportunity to meet people from other labels and bands is why we love what we do. This is another great chance to chat with true music fans who appreciate physical music, collecting and supporting independent labels and artists. What’s a better way to spend a Saturday afternoon? On top of that, it’s a great chance to see what other labels are doing, and talk to them about what works for them and what doesn’t. Not to mention, shopping for myself.

What is the inspiration for your label?

Our label is inspired by independent documentarians, DIY assthetic and lovers of the original artifact; handmade packaging, silkscreen, home recordings, community building and more

Do you have any influences outside of music in how you run your company?

Music should be inspired by the circumstances of your life. In Canada we recognize the issues faced by First Nations and work to inform our youth and reach out to them through the art medium.

What’s the best market you’ve ever been to? What did you buy?

We adore regional record fairs where we can find rare and out of print mono records, early stereo mixes and bootlegs. also Kazoo Print expo is always outstanding but this year FLATSTOCK took the cake at SXSW… We came home inspired with new friends from all over America doing the same thing. Stickers and prints galore!

What kind of deals will you have on your stall?

All of our material is limited edition and hand printed, we will be carrying seven inches printed in the Arctic by Inuit Youth. We are also printing a special NXNE poster and compilation download.

Why did you say yes to doing this market?

We feel our bands, our label has a place amongst the biggest labels in Canada, we continue to seek exposure and acknowledgement that the long standing tradition of DIY is alive and well and continues to be competitive in a digitally saturated market.

What is the inspiration for your label?

I started the label while playing drums in a spacerock band. In terms of an aesthetic, the inspiration was initially other labels that seemed to have a defined scope and clear aesthetic, such as Too Pure, Kranky, or Thrill Jockey. Along the way, we morphed into a full-service music publisher, so labels like Motown that have successfully integrated label and publishing in a creative way under one roof are also a great inspiration.

Do you have any influences outside of music in how you run your company?

I’m interested in process and organizational learning, and trying to make the non-creative aspects of a music company as consistent as possible. My thinking has been heavily influenced by the writing of Peter Senge, Michael Gerber, Eric Ries and many others.

What’s the best market you’ve ever been to? What did you buy?

I’ve been to so many used record markets/exchanges, it’s hard to say which was the best. I’m not a collector of rarities or anything like that, but I was pretty excited to recently pick up a copy of Kraftwerk’s Autobahn album in near-mint condition.

What kind of deals will you have on your stall?

We’ll have amazing deals on back catalogue and new releases, plus discounts on future purchases via our online store.

Why did you say yes to doing this market?

We participated in a similar marketplace that Wavelength organized about 10 years ago, and it was a lot of fun!

What is the inspiration for your label?

When CD burners came out, I started making short-run releases of my own music and selling them to friends. I was still in high school, so funds were pretty much nil. After a few years I had a small catalogue, and when I reached college I decided to set-up a website to archive everything. I already knew HTML and I wanted to design a site that presented the music in a way that was close to viewing a physical package. Then Myspace came out (followed by Facebook) and I started connecting with other artists from around the world who wanted to put their music on my site. Everyone was like-minded and worked independently. Which I guess makes Amok Recordings kind of like a collective… Over the next few years, I started buying tools and supplies to start making physical releases, which is where we are today. Everything is done in-house. (except the tapes, which are pro-dubbed)

Do you have any influences outside of music in how you run your company?

The food industry is a large influence. I like to think of the label in terms of a self-sustaining farm. We use our own tools and rely on hard labour. (with some fertile ground of course)

What’s the best market you’ve ever been to? What did you buy?

I went to a record show in London a few years ago and a few of the vendors were selling bootleg concert DVD’s of bands from the 70’s (stuff that wasn’t released elsewhere)… They all had these hand-made packages and they were being sold at the same price as other commercial products which I loved… It’s unfortunate that the bands weren’t getting anything out of the deal, but I have to admit that it was still a highlight. (I don’t think Pink Floyd’s bank account had been impacted too much)

What kind of deals will you have on your stall?

All purchases will come with a free 2012/2013 label compilation CD-r (housed in an 18pt chipboard sleeve). We also have some buttons that we’re going to give away.

Why did you say yes to doing this market?

Aside from the opportunity to showcase my own label, I’m really interested in meeting with other label owners and hopefully learning some new things. - I’m also there as a fan! The list of labels is great. I’m very humbled to be a part of it.

What is the inspiration for your label?

We’re inspired by great music by great artists and offering an environment where artists can grow and develop and continue to challenge themselves

Do you have any influences outside of music in how you run your company?

Baseball. Artist development is a lot like player development, it’s take patience and charting the right course so the band can fulfill their potential and have long careers.

What’s the best market you’ve ever been to? What did you buy?

Flatstock at SXSW is a great marketplace for the visual art side of music and every year I usually buy a couple unique concert posters.

What kind of deals will you have on your stall?

We’ll be giving a way some limited run posters, limited edition vinyl and of course, the great music of our roster

Why did you say yes to doing this market?

It’s amazing that the market has come to Toronto, it gives the labels a chance to interact with the people who keep us in business. There’s mystery on both sides, the labels don’t know the consumers and the consumers don’t know the labels so this is a great opportunity to clear the shroud of mystery.

What is the inspiration for your label?

Everything I learnt about business came from my dad.

What’s the best market you’ve ever been to? What did you buy?

Not sure….. I went to a market in Turkey once that was pretty wild. ALMOST purchased a rug…..have regretted that I didn’t ever since.

What kind of deals will you have on your stall?

We have rare seven inches, marked down records and package deals.

Why did you say yes to doing this market?

I wanted to be a part of the label community in this great city of ours.

What is the inspiration for your label?

The inspiration for Paper Bag Records was Sub Pop. Working as a sales rep at a music distributor prior to starting the label, I loved the way that Sub Pop released music from many different genres, which was a bit different from other indie labels at that time (2002). I wanted to support the many different flavours that Toronto was producing musically and seeing them do it successfully gave us the push to try it out for ourselves. And it worked!

Do you have any influences outside of music in how you run your company?

I am a collector. I like to collect things. Not a lot of different things but records and bourbon are two things I like to collect. And before that it was hockey cards, when I was a kid. So I’d like to think that I’ve take that ‘collector’ way of thinking and brought it to the label. When we make our vinyl releases for our bands, having that in mind and creating a product or item that is more collectable rather than something that is always going to be available is something that has always been a goal for me. I’d like to think that the fans of the label also enjoy the fact that we put so much effort into these items, it’s fun for them too.

What’s the best market you’ve ever been to? What did you buy?

The best market I’ve ever been to is the Grand Bazaar in Istanbul, Turkey. This place was just unbelievable. It was neat and tidy, and so beautiful to see how the vendors displayed their goods – mostly spices, silk goods, food stands and jewellers. I bought spices and a couple silk scarves for my wife – of course.

What kind of deals will you have on your stall?

Deals. That’s exactly what we’ll have at our stall. I’m looking forward to sharing a few hard to find items, some 7” singles and vinyl, along with some posters that we’ve done over the years. Maybe even a hard to find t-shirt or two. It’s going to be a blast.

Why did you say yes to doing this market?

Well, we are the host label and we are honoured to be part of this amazing idea that has been so successful in other music cities around the world – our team is looking forward to chatting with fans, discussing our limited edition vinyl releases and interacting with the public like no other way we have in the past. What is the inspiration for your label?

No one wanted to sign our band so we signed ourselves. If you are prepared to do the work, loaning money from Visa is way cheaper (18%) than signing to a real label (50% or worse)

Do you have any influences outside of music in how you run your company?

Yes, all of my influences except for a small pocket of people I respect, admire and try to learn from. Besides them, most people in the music business are either in it for fame, which makes them douchebags or in it for money, which makes them stupid and douchebags.

What’s the best market you’ve ever been to? What did you buy?

I once went to a night market in China where I bought delicious spicy crawfish boiled in fish heads, and 1 dollar warm beers. There were tons of t-shirts that made no sense like one that had Marilyn Monroe on it and said “the blueprints I sent will arrive tomorrow. “

I almost bought a puppy too but it’s probably a good thing I didn’t.

What kind of deals will you have on your stall?

We love to bargain. Also, most things we release, we just end up giving all the copies to friends…. so come make friends and we will probably give you a bunch of vinyl that no one wanted to buy.

Why did you say yes to doing this market?

As my Opa used to say

What is the inspiration for your label?

I am inspired to release music that I believe in. I am not genre focused and if I can find a way to market the music and share it with others, I will. I look at We Are Busy Bodies as a label for bands to use as a springboard. I’ve found great success in this approach as the label grew out of a need to find a way to release and distribute my first band’s music.

Do you have any influences outside of music in how you run your company?

From a young age I have been very entrepreneurial in spirit. I’m someone who has learned from trial and error and is not afraid to have to work hard to achieve my objective. My label isn’t necessarily modelled after any others. There are so many great labels in Canada and around the world that foster great talent and I’d like to think that my label is capable of doing the same.

What’s the best market you’ve ever been to? What did you buy?

My favourite market in the world isn’t a music market, but a food market. Borough Market in London, England is great for fresh seasonal and prepared food, is full of hustle and bustle and laid out in a way that makes it enjoyable to walk through. Any time I am in the UK it is a must for me to visit. I usually buy a little of everything and end up needing to sit by the Thames needing to recover for a while.

What kind of deals will you have on your stall?

I’m still working out final details, but anticipate having the following sales:

3 7”s for $10

2 LPs for $15 or 3 for $20

Bags for $3

Limited out of print records and test presses ranging from $10-50 most likely.

Why did you say yes to doing this market?

I look at it as a great opportunity to share the music I am passionate about with an audience interested in finding out about new music. To be alongside my peers who run so many great labels is an honour and a chance to pick up some new records in the process.

What is your inspiration for your label?

Hanging out, teenage mixtapes run through delay pedals, creative friends, packed shows in impoverished art galleries, neon sunsets, other records, thrift stores, altered states, loneliness.

Do you have any influences outside of music in how you run your company?

Of course. All musicians and record labels should be influenced by more than just music.

Is this what you want to do for the rest of your life?

In an ideal world, yes. In this world, probably not. Life is long.

What’s the best market you’ve ever been to? What did you buy?

A Christian thrift store in the Inland Empire where some 90’s DJ had just discarded half his collection. I bought like 25 UK Acid 12 inches from 1990-1995, $1 each. A few of them were real gems.

What kind of deals will you have on your stall?

A couple brand new releases, a crate of for-one-day-only $5 LPs, and a box of bizarre rare secondhand oddities.

What is your inspiration for your label?

Mono Prism was created to help friends release music and print projects without the hassles that come with working with most people.

Do you have any influences outside of music in how you run your company?

Yes, simplicity. Keeping everything as simple as can be.

Is this what you want to do for the rest of your life?

Who knows. It feels good now so I roll with it.

What’s the best market you’ve ever been to? What did you buy?

The other day I went to a market next to my house in the Lower Eastside of New York City and they sold me a lighter with a built in strobe light for $1. “Best’s” can change daily.

What kind of deals will you have on your stall?

We will have SISU’s limited release of the the ’Light Eyes’ E.P. on red haze vinyl and tape for a handsome price. I think we may be sold out of everything else.

What is your inspiration for your label?

Inspiration for Cool Summer comes primarily from the joy of discovering new music, and the dedication a new artist can have for their craft from the very early stages of their career. I’m talking about unknown musicians that are willing to sacrifice jobs, relationships, stability, and sanity in pursuit of creating something they believe in.

Do you have any influences outside of music in how you run your company?

Gordon Ramsey on Hell’s Kitchen.

Is this what you want to do for the rest of your life?

Naw, I’ll probably hang it up in a year… I mean, yes, without a doubt.

What’s the best market you’ve ever been to? What did you buy?

The last ILMLA. I bought Christian Death’s Only Theater of Pain from the good folks at Frontier Records.

What kind of deals will you have on your stall?

Well, all our 7“‘s are $5 so you can check out a bunch of new music for cheap, and we’ll have some signed stuff from some of our artists. Oh yeah, and we’ll have the few remaining copies of Gardens and Villa’s Black Hills 7” and Crimson Scarlet’s Sanctuary 7”.

What is your inspiration for your label?

To vinylize recordings by our favorite bands.

Do you have any influences outside of music in how you run your company?

Warren Buffett has some pretty radical ideas. “Break Even Or Die Trying” is our motto.

Is this what you want to do for the rest of your life?

Yes, please.

What’s the best market you’ve ever been to? What did you buy?

The Utrecht Record Fair is incredible. I bought loads of rare Krautrock, Minimal Synth, and French Yeh-Yeh Pop records we rarely see in the states.

What kind of deals will you have on your stall?

Besides some $5 LPs, I hope to have some Kim and Kelley Deals. Buh-dum-ptch.

What is your inspiration for your label?

When I was younger I loved labels that put connections and creative practice before business and expansion. Some labels felt like families. They had a magnetic pull that would suck me in. Sometimes I was more interested in the characters involved than in the music itself. I wanted an ongoing project like that - where I could work with friends, make new friends, and test my creative limits without the imperatives of big money.

Do you have any influences outside of music in how you run your company?

Sometimes I get lost in this vision of a pre-industrial guild system, where trade is based on some altruistic code of reciprocity. It’s silly and romantic but I like to keep it in mind.

Is this what you want to do for the rest of your life?

Why not? This will never be my primary gig, but it’s a sustainable outlet for my creative energies. I’d like to keep inching it forward in a casual way.

What’s the best market you’ve ever been to? What did you buy?

Utrecht for sure. It was hard to keep my eyes on the prize with all of the deep record-head dialogue going on around me. Some real archival minds. I bought a De Kreuners record for 1 euro. The vendor definitely gave me a look.

What kind of deals will you have on your stall?

I’ll have a lot of new releases available for the first time. I’m also putting together some package deals, which will be assembled thematically: “loners & freaks”, “keyboards & crybabies”, “I used to like noise” the list goes on.

What is your inspiration for your label?

The label was always based on making dope records. There was no ambition to be a big record company. It was a very organic process where Mike Ross and Matt Dike sampled some of the funkiest records they could find, and created tracks that would turn people onto the records that had been inspiring them for years.

Do you have any influences outside of music in how you run your company?

Great cinema and art is always the catalyst. We always try to work with cool visual artists to make the album covers and videos. There is something of a Delicious Vinyl aesthetic that influences the music. We don’t fuck with flashy.

Is this what you want to do for the rest of your life?

I like to paint and produce films and live shows, so I see it at the center of what I love to do. Keepin’ it Funky & Fresh.

What’s the best market you’ve ever been to? What did you buy?

The Clignancourt Flea Market, Les Puces, on the outskirts of Paris is where I get my trill vintage crepe for the ladies and that magnificent Gypsy Jazz for my soul. Chanel & Django on ice.

What kind of deals will you have on your stall?

Girl is Tough will serenade all customers, with her new smash “Blah, Blah Blah.” It’s the joint.
